QUINCY, Ill. —
Reece Davis had the sweep in his grasp, and he refused to let go of the broom.
With a run in and the tying run on second in the ninth, the Bellarmine University sophomore right-hander delivered a game-ending strikeout Sunday to seal a 6-5 victory and three-game sweep of Quincy in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Senior third baseman
Josh Finerty homered for the second straight game and went 3 for 4 for Bellarmine (10-4, 3-0 GLVC), which has won six straight games. Junior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy smashed a two-run homer and freshman first baseman
Noah Nelson went 2 for 2 against Quincy (8-6, 0-3).
While Bellarmine won the first two games of the series handily, Sunday's contest turned into a thriller after Quincy rallied from a 6-2 deficit over the final two innings. Joe Roscetti hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth to slice the Knights' lead to 6-4.
In the ninth, Davis had some rotten luck, as Quincy began the frame with a pair of dink singles. The Hawks advanced to second and third after a sacrifice bunt and cut their deficit to 6-5 after a sacrifice fly. With the tying run on second, Davis built an 0-2 count on Justin Eads and blew a fastball by him for the final out.
Davis (2-2) tied the longest outing of his career by firing 5.0 innings of long relief. He struck out five while allowing three earned runs on three hits. Senior right-hander
Deylen Miley pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
After Quincy took a 1-0 lead in the first, Finerty tied it up in the second after cranking a solo homer to right center. He also started Bellarmine's scoring with a homer in the second game of the series.
Mulcahy hammered a two-run homer down the left-field line in the third, and Bellarmine added another run after consecutive errors by the Hawks for a 4-1 lead. The Knights were then held at bay until plating two more runs in the eighth on Nelson's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by junior catcher
Alex Cleverly for a 6-2 lead.
Those two runs proved to be crucial as Quincy scored three over its next two trips to the plate before Davis closed out the sweep.
Bellarmine will host Missouri S&T in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.
