EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Senior Eric Beck made history Sunday in becoming the first Bellarmine University wrestler to notch a win in the Division I era, and sophomore Devan Hendricks also had his arm raised in First Community Arena.

Bellarmine made its DI debut in a tri-meet against Northern Illinois and host SIU Edwardsville, falling 46-0 and 39-6, respectively, in duals against the Huskies and Cougars.

In the second contest, against SIU Edwardsville, Beck became the first Knight to record a victory with Bellarmine as a DI program when he defeated Chase Diehl by decision, 5-2, at 165. In doing so, the senior moved within a dozen career victories of Bellarmine all-time leader Gage Branson (84).

Hendricks immediately followed at 174 by notching a 6-5 win over Kevin Gschwendtner. Hendricks came closest among the Knights to securing a win against Northern Illinois in the first dual, getting edged 3-2 by Mason Kauffman.

There were three exhibition matches after each dual. Against SIU Edwardsville, Bellarmine sophomore Zane Brown pinned Coleman Brainard at 157.

Bellarmine opens Southern Conference action by facing host Appalachian State and Davidson in a tri-meet next Sunday.
