Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine field hockey played Appalachian State tight in the second half but ultimately fell 4-2 at Trager Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers got off to a quick start, scoring within the first two minutes. Following a penalty corner, Pauline Mangold found the back of the cage to give Appalachian State a 1-0 lead.
After both teams settled in the rest of the quarter, Appalachian State got another early goal in the second period. Mangold sent a ball in front of goal, and Sarah Farrell deflected it home for a 2-0 Mountaineers lead.
The Knights fought hard though, and a strong second half started with
Amber Hofenk Jerembo's fourth goal of the season.
Anna Crump fed Hofenk Jerembo right of the cage, and she blasted the ball in to make it a 2-1 score just 100 seconds into the third quarter.
The Mountaineers responded within two minutes, however, pushing it back to a two-goal lead thanks to a Charlotte Bosma goal off a rebound.
With under seven minutes to play in the third, the Knights made it one-goal game again.
Bente Moormann found Crump just inside the circle, and she fired it to the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the year. Crump and Hofenk Jerembo are now tied for the team lead in goals.
The scoring settled down until there was under six minutes to play, when Anna Smarrelli scored off a corner for Appalachian State. The Mountaineers held on from there to take the game 4-2.
With her goal against Appalachian State, Crump has scored four goals in Bellarmine's last four games. Hofenk Jermebo has scored three goals in her last five games.
Knights goalkeeper
Breanna McWhorter made nine saves.
Bellarmine trailed 14-13 in shots entering the fourth quarter, but the Mountaineers out-shot the Knights 6-0 in the final period. Appalachian State had 13 total shots on goal compared to Bellarmine's three.
Bellarmine drops to 1-11 this season and is back on the road Friday to face Ball State (4-9, 2-2 MAC) at 1:00 p.m. in Muncie, Ind. The Knights' only win this season came against the Cardinals in the season opener by a final score of 2-1.
