LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Emma Hawkins can only be contained for so long.
And unfortunately for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team, the amount of time the Knights were able to bottle up the ASUN's leading goal scorer Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium expired in overtime, as Hawkins sank the golden goal with just over two minutes left to lead Central Arkansas to a 1-0 victory in ASUN action.
It was a heartbreaking finish for Bellarmine (3-6-7, 1-5-2), which celebrated Senior Day but, more than that, commanded a lot of the play against West Division leader Central Arkansas (9-7, 6-2). The Bears improved to 4-0 in divisional play while the Knights dropped to 0-2-2.
Bellarmine had a sizable lead in shots at 15-5 but a much smaller advantage on frame at 4-3. In only the fifth minute, junior midfielder
Brielle Heuglin had a shot carom off the bottom side of the crossbar. Barely nine minutes into the game, senior midfielder
Lauren Mackey forced the Bears to make a defensive save, as the Knights were assertive from the get-go but couldn't gain an advantage.
Facing the ASUN's highest-scoring team in goals per game at 2.07, Bellarmine's defense delivered one of its best efforts of the season. The Knights held the Bears to three shots in the first half and only one in the second half.
Central Arkansas also had a lone attempt in overtime, but the Bears made it count. Gracie Hair made a fine lead pass to Hawkins just right of center in the box. Hawkins was then able to rifle a shot inside the far post for her league-high 13th goal of the season. It was her fourth game-winner.
Bellarmine honored seven seniors prior to the game:
Sarah Buse,
Grady Clark,
Elyssa Francis,
Laurie Hargis,
Regan Kommor,
Lauren Mackey and
Elise Markley.
Bellarmine will conclude the regular season at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Eastern Kentucky.
