Anthony Ethington combined for a strong overall pitching performance as the Bellarmine University baseball team made its Division I debut by opening the 2021 season at No. 6 Louisville.
Behind a three-run second inning and exceptional pitching themselves, the Cardinals captured a 5-1 victory over the crosstown Knights at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Barringer (0-1) struck out five and allowed four earned runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched for Bellarmine (0-1). The lefty gave up solo homers to Cameron Masterman and Dalton Rushing in the three-run second but regrouped against Louisville (1-0) to allow just one run over the next 3.0 innings.
Ethington entered in the sixth and tossed 3.0 shutout innings. He allowed three hits and struck out one against no walks.
Bellarmine scored its lone run in the first. After senior third baseman
Josh Finerty was hit by a pitch, senior designated hitter
Chris Gambert drove him in after crushing a double to the right center wall.

Jack Ockerman had one hit apiece for Bellarmine.
Glenn Albanese earned the win for Louisville, allowing one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
Bellarmine will meet Louisville in a doubleheader starting at noon (ET) Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
