LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Junior right fielder
Matt Higgins launched the Bellarmine University baseball team's first home run as a Division I program Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader against No. 6 Louisville.
The Cardinals were able to complete a three-game sweep of the Knights with an 8-3 win in the finale at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Higgins led off the sixth for Bellarmine (0-3) by hammering a solo homer to center field. He also had an RBI single in the third inning.
Senior left fielder
Chris Gambert had two hits against Louisville (3-0), while junior first baseman
Jacob Mulcahy had an RBI single and senior second baseman
Justin Rouse accounted for a hit.
Louisville scored three runs in the first and third, but junior right-hander
Reece Davis (0-1) shut out the Cardinals in the fourth and fifth, which included a great diving catch by senior third baseman
Josh Finerty and pick at first by Mulcahy.
After loading the bases in the third, when Higgins had the RBI single, the Knights would load them up again in the eighth but failed to capitalize as a fly out ended the inning.
Luke Smith picked up the win for the Cardinals after allowing one hit with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched.
Bellarmine will play at 3 p.m. (ET) Wednesday at Morehead State.
