LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University softball team replicated its results from Friday, only in reverse order.
On Saturday at Knights Field, Bellarmine defeated Western Michigan 2-1 before falling 8-6 to Morehead State. A day prior, the Knights lost 10-4 to the Eagles before posting a 4-1 victory over the Broncos.
GAME 1
Carson Goatley fired a gem for Bellarmine (2-2) against Western Michigan (2-3) in earning her first collegiate win. The freshman right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing one run on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.
Sophomore shortstop
Alexis Hargrove took care of the run production. In the third, she lined a single to center to bring in junior right fielder
Grace Werner, who led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior second baseman
Hannah Webb.
Hargrove's first RBI tied the game at 1-1. Her second proved to be the game-winning RBI. In the fifth, Werner led off with a walk, advanced on another Webb sacrifice, took third on a passed ball and scored when Hargrove rifled a single to right.
Goatley took care of the rest. The one run she yielded came in the third. Western Michigan did load the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Goatley induced a ground out to end it.
GAME 2
Entering the bottom of the third against Morehead State (4-3), Bellarmine trailed 5-0, but the Knights ended the inning with a 6-5 lead.
Webb and junior left fielder
Joelle Zielinski both had two-run singles in the frame and freshman designated hitter
Gwen Malecke had an RBI single.
Unfortunately for Bellarmine, the Knights didn't score again after the third and collected only two more hits. For the second straight game against Bellarmine, Lennon Spicer came on in relief for Morehead State and earned the win, this time tossing 5.0 effective innings while allowing one earned run.
Morehead State tied the game at 6-6 with a run in the fourth and took the lead with two runs in the sixth. The Knights loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh after singles by Webb and sophomore catcher
Sydney Young bracketed a walk by Hargrove, but Spicer ended the game with a strikeout.
Bellarmine will host Evansville in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET) Wednesday.
