FLORENCE, Ala. — A freshman connection and stout defense propelled the Bellarmine University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory Thursday over North Alabama in ASUN play at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
Freshman forward
Sophie Bish scored her first collegiate goal off the first collegiate assist from freshman forward
Lindsay Durham for Bellarmine (2-3, 2-1 ASUN), which is now 2-0 in road games in the conference. North Alabama (1-5, 0-3) became the Knights' second shutout victim, as Bellarmine hasn't allowed more than one goal in a game since its opener.
"That was not our prettiest game, but it was exactly what we needed," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "We've done a lot of things better than most people would have expected up to this point, but we said in our scouting that part of the process is figuring out how to get results at this level. At the DII level, we knew how to manage and find a result even if we played poorly. It seemed so far this year we would feel like we played well but not figure out to make it pay off."
Bellarmine scored relatively early in Thursday's contest. In the 26th minute, Bish was tightly guarded dribbling toward the end line in the right side of the box, but just before her shot angle closed, she slid and laced an attempt that landed inside the far post.
Bellarmine held an 8-6 advantage in shots, including 4-3 on goal, and limited UNA to a single attempt in the second half. Junior goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis corralled three saves.
"Sophie took her chance today," Tinius said. "We withstood some pressure in the second half but held them to just one true shot. That's what it took today and that's what we were able to do.
"North Alabama is well coached and plays hard. In many ways, this was like playing ourselves. The whole plan was to be effective as much as anything else, and I think we were."
Bellarmine will host Lipscomb at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
