LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lipscomb scored in the eighth minute and made it stand up in defeating the Bellarmine University women's soccer team 1-0 Sunday in ASUN action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Molly Grant's third goal of the season was the difference for Lipscomb (4-2-1, 3-0-1 ASUN) against the Knights (2-4, 2-2). A little over seven minutes into the contest, Shelby Craft sent a corner kick that was touched first by Kaitlin Echols and finished off by Grant.
Ultimately, Bellarmine's closest chance at scoring may have preceded Lipscomb's goal. In the fifth minute, sophomore forward
Brielle Heuglin ripped a shot toward the top corner of the near post that Lady Bisons goalkeeper CJ Graham knocked away. The Knights had several services in the box thereafter and three corner kicks, but they attempted just one more shot after Heuglin's look.
"Lipscomb is a strong, athletic team that is difficult to deal with," Knights Coach
Chris Tinius said. "They have some top individual talent and play an assertive style on top of that. We were in the game and gave ourselves a chance again, but at some point, we have to look like we want to seize the moment and not play like we are waiting for them to make a mistake and give it to us."
Lipscomb attempted 11 shots and had some near-misses in the second half. In one sequence, Grant missed a second goal by inches as her shot caromed off the crossbar, and it took an exceptional save by sophomore goalkeeper
Bailee Witt to stop a rebound goal.
Lipscomb managed to keep Bellarmine from attempting a shot in the second half.
"One of the big differences today was that one team has the experience of recent conference championships and wins lots of little of moments within the game. The other gave themselves a chance but had to be convinced to try and take advantage of the chance," Tinius said. "Once that clicks for us, we will start to get more results. Until then, we have to stay focused on what we do well and keep at the process."
Bellarmine will host North Alabama at 6 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
