Knights drop pair of pitching duels in ASUN debut

FLORENCE, Ala.--The Bellarmine softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to the North Alabama Lions in their ASUN debut. The Knights lost a pair of closely contested pitching duels that ended with final scores of 2-0 and 3-1.

The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one courtesy of back-to-back doubles from outfielders Sidney Bevis and Meleah Hargett. The early run would prove to be the difference in the ballgame as senior Pitcher Megan Garst was untouchable. Garst struck out five of the first six Knights she faced and allowed no hits and just two walks in a complete game effort

North Alabama struck again after second basemen Emma Latham led off the second inning off with a single to left center and later came around to score after a clutch two-out double from the Lions' No. 9 hitter Kalli Daniel. After the early damage, Bellarmine starter Carson Goatley settled in terrifically and went the distance, striking out a pair and holding the Lions scoreless the rest of the way.

The Knights created a scoring opportunity in the top of
the third when second basemen Gwen Malecke drew a one-out walk and was sacrificed over by teammate Carley Ziegler, but Bellarmine couldn't come up with the situational hit they needed to capitalize

The Knights were only able to manage one more baserunner the rest of the way
, a full count walk from shortstop Alexis Hargrove. Goatley scattered two more baserunners over her final four innings of work and was able to strand a runner on second after giving up a leadoff double in the fourth.

Bellarmine was able to wake the bats up a bit for
game two but pitching continued to dominate the day during the nightcap. The Lions grabbed another first inning lead on the back of a two out single and a stolen base from Meleah Hargett. Cleanup hitter Emma Latham made the aggressive baserunning pay off for her team and was able to bring Hargett home with a single to left center

North
Alabama manufactured another run in the bottom of the second when Kalli Daniel worked a one out walk and was moved into scoring position on a sac-bunt by her teammate Emma Broadfoot. A wild pitch advanced Daniel to third where she was able to score on a ground out.

Carson Goatley was big for the Knights again in game two, this time on offense. Bellarmine finally cracked the hit column in the
top of the fourth thanks to a one-out Goatley single, but nothing came of it in the inning. In the circle, the Lions received another strong outing from their starter, junior Sidney Revels, who threw a complete game without allowing a walk and held all the Knights (besides Goatley) hitless.

Megan Murphy matched her teammate Goatley's complete game effort, giving up thre
e runs and walking just two batters. North Alabama was able to put up an insurance run on Murphy in the bottom of the fourth, with the lone hit of the inning being a solo homerun by First basemen Harley Stokes.

Goatley
stepped up for Bellarmine yet again in the top of the seventh. With their backs against the wall, Goatley ripped a leadoff home run to start the last frame and provide the Knights with their only run of the day. Bellarmine was unable to ride the momentum to a late rally as Sidney Revels was able to retire the Knights in order after the home run.

The losses drop the Knights to 4-10 on the season and leaves them needing a win on Sunday afternoon to avoid the being swept.
