Women's soccer plays to scoreless stalemate with North Alabama

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with North Alabama on Thursday in ASUN action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Opportunities were not an issue for Bellarmine (2-4-1, 2-2-1 ASUN), which had a decisive 18-8 advantage in shots over North Alabama (1-6-1, 0-4-1). When sophomore forward Tristan Whalen's shot in the 109th minute whizzed by within inches of the far post, it summed up a night where the Knights were agonizingly close to scoring on several occasions.

"I thought we did some good things tonight, especially early," Knights Coach Chris Tinius said, "but we didn't do enough things that good teams do. Those aren't always one and the same. As a staff, we obviously need to do a better job differentiating between those and helping our players figure it out."

Bellarmine's defense notched its third shutout, and the Knights have not allowed more than one goal in six of their seven games. However, Bellarmine has scored only twice this season. North Alabama defender Hannah Guthrie made a defensive save in the 13th minute that ultimately loomed large, as Guthrie stopped a header off a corner kick by senior midfielder Natalie Teo that was on course for the net.

Bellarmine couldn't quite capitalize on a fierce wind that was to its advantage in the second half and first overtime. Whalen's shot was the only one taken by either team in the two overtimes. In addition to the lopsided shot count, the Knights had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"Give credit to North Alabama: We had a lot of early opportunities but they found energy and, by the end of the game, they were first to just about every ball," Tinius said. "They didn't give in and earned a deserved point on the road."

Bellarmine will play at noon (ET) Sunday at Kennesaw State.
