Thundering Herd drives past Knights 10-0

HUNTINGTON, W. Va.—The Bellarmine softball team dropped the third game of the series against Marshall on Sunday afternoon to finish 1-2 against the Thundering Herd in nonconference action this weekend.

After splitting games yesterday at Mashall's Dot Hicks Field, the Knights found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-0 contest today.  The Herd banged out eight base hits and took advantage of a pair of errors and seven walks issued by Bellarmine pitchers to plate 10 runs over the first four innings.

Meanwhile, Marshall hurler Laney Jones was tossing a gem, sailing through the first four frames without surrendering a base hit to the Knights and allowing just two baserunners by way of the walk.

Bellarmine finally broke through for a base hit with one out in the top of the fifth when Hattie Hartman lifted a ball to deep right field that went for a double.  Pinch hitter Sarah Ratterman followed with a double of her own, but because the hit was a looper to shallow left field, Hartman had to hold at second until the ball landed safely on the turf.

Despite having runners on second and third with one out, the Knights couldn't push across a run as Jones got a grounder to third that resulted in Hartman being tagged out after a brief rundown and induced a pop fly to shortstop to close out the game.

Bellarmine falls to 5-18 on the season while Marshall improves to 11-4. The Knights return to ASUN Conference play this week as they host Lipscomb in a three-game set on Friday and Saturday.
