Jaguars claw out 2-1 win over Knights in 9 innings

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine softball team dropped a defensive struggle at Knights Field today as the visiting IUPUI Jaguars escaped with a 2-1 victory in nine innings.

The two teams combined for just five hits in the game as Bellarmine pitcher Carson Goatley and IUPUI hurler Lexi Lucas both tossed complete games.

Once the game reached extra innings, a runner was placed on second base, and the Jaguars were able to take advantage in the top of the ninth.  Jaida Speth was the runner placed on second, and she advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Gilbert.  Pinch hitter Abbey Haas then hit a hard grounder past the bag at third to plate Gilbert with what was the winning run.

In the bottom of the ninth Alexis Hargrove started on second base but never got to advance after shallow fly ball to center and sacrifice bunt attempt was caught in the air by the IUPUI first baseman.  Bellarmine's final chance ended as a long fly ball down the left field line was gloved in foul territory.

The Jaguars broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth as Gilbert connected for IUPUI's first base hit in the game, a single to left.  After a sacrifice bunt and another single, Gilbert came home on a sacrifice fly to left.

Bellarmine came back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth.  Grace Werner drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Sydney Young then delivered a game-tying double as she smashed a drive to deep center field.

The Knights' only other base hit in the game belonged to Anna Greenwell who reached on an infield single in the third inning.

The pitching stat lines were both stellar.  Goatley was saddled with the loss after surrendering just one earned run on three hits in nine innings.  She struck seven and issued just two walks.

Lucas, meanwhile, gave up just two hits and one run while walking three and striking out three.

Bellarmine falls to 2-5 on the year while IUPUI gets its first victory to move to 1-5.

The Knights are back in action tomorrow as they'll face the University of Dayton at 11 a.m. before a rematch with the Jaguars immediately following.
