LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The visiting Lipscomb Bisons got a solid pitching performance and added just enough offense to post a 5-0 victory over Bellarmine in an ASUN Conference contest at Knights Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Lipscomb pitcher Breana Burke hurled a complete game, 4-hit shutout and the Bisons plated five runs on eight hits to secure the win.
The deciding run came on just the fourth pitch of the game as Lipscomb's Presley Leebrick belted a solo shot to right field to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The Bisons went on to tack on two runs in both the third and fourth innings to make the final 5-0.
Burke and the Lipscomb defense simply made the Knights earn everything they got. Surrendering no walks, Burke gave up back-to-back hits just once in the game when
Sydney Young and
Hattie Hartman each poked shots through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the second.
The only other time a Bellarmine runner reached second base was in the bottom of the seventh following another Hartman single and a Lipscomb error.
Carson Goatley got the start in the circle for the Knights and was saddled with the loss.
Natalie Magnus turned in a solid relief appearance, going 4.2 innings and striking out four while giving up two runs on a walk and three hits.
Bellarmine slips to 6-21 overall and 0-7 in league play while Lipscomb moves to a game over .500 at 14-13 and improves to 3-4 in the ASUN.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they host Kennesaw State in an ASUN doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
