LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kennesaw State edged the Bellarmine University baseball team 3-1 Saturday after a pitchers' duel in ASUN action at Knights Field.
Jacob Nagel fired the first-ever complete game at the Division I level for Bellarmine (10-21, 5-9 ASUN), allowing three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 9.0 innings pitched. The senior right-hander didn't yield a run after the third inning and continued his effectiveness in the starting rotation since being inserted from among the primary relievers due to injuries on the staff.
Luke Torbert (5-1) tossed a four-hitter in earning a complete-game victory for Kennesaw State (21-9, 9-2), which clinched the series after winning Friday as well. The right-hander struck out seven against three walks while allowing a single run in the ninth.
Senior third baseman
Josh Finerty broke up Torbert's shutout bid by roping his fourth homer of the season, a line-drive rocket off the net above the left-field fence leading off the ninth. The Knights had the tying run at the plate after an infield single by junior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy before Torbert sewed up the win by inducing a ground out.
Finerty, Mulcahy, junior shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer and senior catcher
Patrick Arndt registered one hit apiece for Bellarmine.
Kennesaw State scored once in the first and twice in the third, the latter on a two-run homer by Tyler Tolve. Nagel didn't surrender another run to the Owls thereafter.
The teams will conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Knights Field.
