LYNCHBURG, Va.—The Bellarmine Knights softball team got swept by ASUN North Division leader Liberty University in a conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon on Liberty's campus. The Flames took game one 8-0 in six innings and came back and again shut out the Knights in game two, winning 10-0 in five innings.
The Flames, who came in as the ASUN's top offensive club, added to their resume today, banging out 18 runs in just nine-plus at-bats. Liberty totaled 19 hits in 46 at-bats which equates to a .413 batting average on the day.
In game one, the Knights threatened in the first and third innings but stranded a runner at third in both frames. Conversely, the Flames came through in the clutch as six of their eight runs came with two outs.
The Knights managed two hits in the game with
Olivia Bricker smacking a double to right field and
Alexis Hargrove collecting a single to right. Emily Sweat was the offensive leader for Liberty, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while driving in four of the Flames' eight runs.
The second game was pretty much all Liberty as only two Knights reached base.
Hattie Hartman collected the only Bellarmine hit, a double to right center in the top of the second. For the Flames, Autumn Bishop went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs while her twin sister, Amber, popped a 3-run homer. Sweat also made her presence felt in game two when she got the ball rolling with a two-run homer in the second inning.
Liberty pitchers Emily Kirby and Naomi Jones picked up the wins while Bellarmine's
Carson Goatley and
Olivia Knies were saddled with the losses for Bellarmine.
The Flames improve to 34-12 overall and 14-2 in league play. The Knights drop to 6-26 (0-14 ASUN).
The teams will close out the three-game set with a single contest tomorrow at 1 p.m.
