LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Youngstown State completed a sweep of the Bellarmine University baseball team with a 5-1 victory Sunday in nonconference action at Knights Field.
Freshman right-hander
Devin Ecklar was the biggest bright spot for Bellarmine (13-34), tossing 4.0 scoreless innings of relief and allowing just two hits with three strikeouts against no walks as the Knights completed the regular season.
Bellarmine was even with Youngstown State (29-21) at eight hits apiece, but the Knights stranded 12 base runners. Senior third baseman
Josh Finerty, senior designated hitter
Chris Gambert and senior left fielder
Matt Higgins all doubled, but Bellarmine only pushed across the one run on an RBI single by freshman second baseman
Brett Pfaadt in the eighth.
Gambert had two hits for Bellarmine, which trailed 3-0 in the first after a two-run YSU homer. The Penguins tacked on a run each in the third and fifth.
Senior left-hander
Shane Barringer tossed an inning of relief for Bellarmine in his first outing since returning from an injury that sidelined him since April 3.
Bellarmine will travel to Liberty for an ASUN Championship quarterfinal series. It's a best-of-three series that begins Friday in Lynchburg, Virginia.
