Men's soccer downed 1-0 by Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Belmont scored late in the second half and stopped a penalty kick attempt inside the last three minutes by the Bellarmine University men's soccer team to pull out a 1-0 win over the Knights on Wednesday night at E.S. Rose Park.

Bellarmine (4-4-1) was shut out for the second straight game. The Knights had opportunities against Belmont (5-3-1), none more promising than in the 88th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after junior forward Juan Ballas was taken down in the box.

However, Drew Romig thwarted the PK attempt. Bellarmine is now 0-for-3 this season on PKs.

Esteban Leiva, who came off the bench, proved to be Belmont's biggest threat offensively against the Knights, accounting for five of the Bruins' six shots. He broke through in the 73rd minute, getting free down the right side and sinking an open look for a 1-0 lead.

Bellarmine finished with a 9-6 advantage in shots, while the teams were even at three on frame. The Knights' defense was particularly effective in a first half in which they limited the Bruins to two shots — and none inside the first 43 minutes.

Bellarmine hosts ASUN foe North Florida at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
