Hendricks places fourth, wrestling totals 18 wins at competitive Soldier Salute Tournament

CORALVILLE, Iowa –  In its first competition after Christmas, the Bellarmine wrestling team compiled 18 wins at the Soldier Salute Collegiate Wrestling Tournament.

The Knights faced off against opponents from 16 other teams over four total sessions on Thursday and Friday in Iowa.  The field included high-major programs such as Iowa, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Minnesota. 

Senior Devan Hendricks led Bellarmine with four victories and a fourth place finish in the 174 weight class, while sophomore Jack Parker earned a pair of wins and placed eighth at 125.

"The Soldier Salute Tournament was awesome," Knights Head Coach Ned Shuck said.  "We are grateful for our team's opportunity to experience high level wrestling and be a part of an event that turned profits to support the men and women in our country's armed forces and help grow women's wrestling."

After falling in a close battle with Iowa's Brennan Swafford (Dec, 6-3), Hendricks proceeded to win three straight matches by decision over Brett McIntosh (Wyoming), Cade Tenold (North Carolina), Kyle Mosher (Columbia), before a medical forfeit win versus Swafford.  Hendricks lost another hard-fought bout in the third-place match against Wyoming's Hayden Hastings, but nabbed an impressive fourth-place finish.

Bellarmine's Parker collected a pair of wins, including a 10-3 win by decision over VMI's Tony Burke.  Parker ended the tournament with a 2-3 record.  Other Bellarmine wrestlers who earned multiple wins were Zac Cowan (3-3) at 149, Cole Nance at 165 (3-3), Thadd Huff (2-2) at 285, and Damion Ryan (2-4) at 125.  Alex Rivera (1-4) also claimed a victory at 165, while William Muckler (1-4) picked up a win at 285.

"Our team experienced the roller-coaster of emotions that comes with tough, hard-nosed competition," Shuck added.  "The individual battles and overall team outcomes will help sharpen our men more than ever before. We are growing at a fast rate, and we are starting to learn how close we are to achieving favorable outcomes against the best opponents in the country. I am so excited for this team!"

Bellarmine is back in Louisville next Friday, when the Knights compete at the Mat Mayhem Open at the Louisville Expo Center on Jan. 6.
