Wrestling travels to South Carolina for duals against Presbyterian and The Citadel

2/10/2022 5:43:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a takedown, you can often hear teams yell, "two!"  That applies to this weekend's schedule for Bellarmine wrestling as they face Presbyterian and The Citadel in a pair of SoCon duals on the road.

The Knights first face Presbyterian on Friday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m.  BU and the Blue Hose were originally scheduled to wrestle in a tri-meet on Jan. 9, but the dual was pushed back due to health and safety protocols.  On Sunday, Bellarmine heads from Clinton to Charleston for a matchup with The Citadel beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Bellarmine was last on the mat Feb. 6 at the Greyhound Open in Indianapolis.  The Knights accumulated 46 wins and 13 pins, while giving 17 wrestlers a chance to compete.  Eric Beck (174) continued his strong senior season with a 3-1 record and second place finish.  Cole Nance (157) moved into the team-lead for wins this season, piling up six victories and a third place finish this past Sunday.  Nance now has 16 wins this year. Mitch Collica (149), Jack Parker (125), and Sam Schroeder (184), also placed.

Knights assistant coach Brendan Murphy was very pleased with Bellarmine's effort this past weekend.

"It was a good day to be a Knight," Murphy said.  "We won almost 50 matches as a team with 17 wrestlers.  Every match, the guys were working to score points and dominate.  Eric Beck making the finals and Cole Nance taking top three showed grit from them.  Overall, we are very happy with the performance and excited about the growth."

Growth has been a theme for Bellarmine this season as they've come increasingly closer to their first SoCon win.  The Knights had a pair of heart-breaking losses on Jan. 16 and Jan. 21 against Gardner-Webb and Davidson respectively.  Presbyterian was picked to finish last in the SoCon pre-season poll, representing a prime opportunity for BU's first conference victory.

The Blue Hose are 1-4 this season with 0-2 record in SoCon duals.  They had a significant pause during the middle of the season, missing over a month with cancellations due to health and safety protocols.  They returned to action in a tri-meet on Jan. 30, when they fell to VMI and Campbell in a tri-meet.

The Citadel is 4-4 this year with a 2-2 SoCon record.  Most recently the Bulldogs lost to Chattanooga 29-11.  They face Gardner-Webb on Friday before meeting up with Bellarmine.  The Citadel was picked to finish fifth in the SoCon pre-season poll.
