Buhr is masterful but Kentucky rallies with 3 runs in ninth to overcome upset bid

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Despite a magnificent start by Drew Buhr, the Bellarmine University baseball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Kentucky on Wednesday night at Kentucky Proud Park after the Wildcats rallied for all three of their runs in the ninth.

A junior righthander, Buhr was making his first-ever start and just his second-ever appearance on the mound for Bellarmine (1-4). He nearly led the Knights to the upset of Kentucky (4-0) after tossing 7.0 superb innings where he allowed no runs and a single hit while striking out three and walking two.

Kentucky recorded its lone hit against Buhr in the third inning. The righty proceeded to retire the side in order in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. He was also perfect in the second inning and allowed only three baserunners over his brilliant outing.

Bellarmine held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. After Hunter Jump led off the inning with a single, Jacob Plastiask smacked a game-tying, two-run homer. It was initially ruled an RBI double, but Plastiask was awarded the tying home run after a video review confirmed the ball left the park.

Bellarmine got the next batter out, but Chase Estep followed with a single. He then raced home with the game-winning run on Oraj Anu's double to right center.

Bellarmine outhit Kentucky 8-6. Senior right fielder Jacob Mulcahy collected two of them, and six other Knights had one apiece.

Bellarmine scored both its runs in the third inning. Senior shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer led off the frame with a double, and senior left fielder Matt Higgins reached on an error. Mulcahy brought home Mehlbauer on a ground out, and sophomore first baseman Davis Crane laced a single through the right side to plate Higgins.

Bellarmine certainly had its chances to build upon its lead. Unfortunately, the Knights left 12 runners on base to the four of Kentucky. Junior righthander Devin Ecklar pitched a scoreless eighth for the Knights.

Bellarmine will play a three-game series this weekend at Southeast Missouri State.
