CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri State completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Bellarmine University baseball team by taking both games of a Sunday doubleheader by scores of 10-2 and 12-8.
GAME 1 – SEMO 10, Bellarmine 2
Andrew Keck smacked a grand slam in the first inning and Noah Niznik allowed only one earned run in 6.0 innings for SEMO (5-1).
Junior second baseman
Dylan Byerly had an RBI double in the fourth, and senior left fielder
Matt Higgins added an RBI single in the seventh for Bellarmine (1-7). Seven different Knights had one hit apiece. Senior center fielder
Jack Ockerman reached base all four at-bats after going 1-for-1 with three walks.
Freshman reliever
Casey Sorg struck out five while allowing one earned run in 3.0 innings for the Knights. SEMO pulled away with two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth.
GAME 2 – SEMO 12, Bellarmine 8
For the second time in the series, SEMO rallied from a big early deficit to capture a win. In the opener, the Redhawks trailed 6-0 after two innings before coming back to secure an 8-7 victory in 11 innings.
In the finale, Bellarmine led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third before SEMO regrouped and ultimately used a seven-run seventh to overtake the Knights en route to another come-from-behind victory.
Junior second baseman
Brett Pfaadt had a two-run single in Bellarmine's three-run first, and Ockerman added his own two-run single in the third to boost the lead to 5-0. Keck launched a two-run homer in a three-run third to help SEMO get started.
Senior shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer tripled for the second time and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, while Ockerman tacked on an RBI ground out and Sorg scored on a passed ball in the seventh as the Knights pushed their lead to 8-4.
Peyton Leeper hit a two-run homer in the seventh, but Danny Sperling delivered the biggest blow with a two-out, go-ahead three-run double. The Redhawks added two more runs in the inning to take an 11-8 lead and held Bellarmine scoreless over the final two frames to lock up the series sweep.
Mehlbauer had two triples and two runs scored, junior third baseman
Peyton Back was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Ockerman registered three RBIs. Pfaadt was 1-for-2 with three walks and two RBIs.
Bellarmine will play at 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Austin Peay State.
