Women's tennis plays Kennesaw State tight at the top, but Owls pull out 4-0 win

KENNESAW, Ga.—  Bellarmine women's tennis rounded out its ASUN opening weekend with a 4-0 loss at Kennesaw State on Sunday.

The Owls, picked fifth in the ASUN pre-season poll, used a strong doubles effort and a sweep of no. 4, no. 5, and no. 6 singles to pick up its first ASUN win after a 4-0 loss to Liberty on Friday.  Rose Pastoret and Channing Varnum were in a close fight, trailing Valentina Taddia and Ji Youn Lee 3-2.  Their match went unfinished, however, with the other doubles matches finishing first.

That was a similar theme in singles, with Sophia Unger, Sofia Pinedo, and Soomin Kim finishing their no. 4, no. 5, and no.6 victories quickly.  Ekaterina Tikhonko led her no. 1 match 6-4, 3-2 but was unable to finish.  Pastoret lost her first set 6-2 but led the second set 4-3 in the no. 2 match.

"We played well today in spots," Knights Head Coach Brian Slack said.  "The score at the top of the lineup shows that we were willing and wanting to compete today!  We will take a couple of days to rest and recover and get back at it to prepare for next weekend."

Bellarmine opens its ASUN home slate on Friday against Lipscomb, followed by a Sunday match versus Jacksonville State.  The matches being at 11:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. respectively at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
