Baseball drops midweek contest at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team was defeated 11-1 by Kentucky on Tuesday night at Kentucky Proud Park.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by Bellarmine (6-26). Kentucky (20-13) defeated the Knights for the second time this season, the first a 3-2 win Feb. 23 in which the Wildcats rallied for three runs in the ninth.

Kentucky only held an 8-6 lead in hits, but the Wildcats also drew eight walks. UK broke the contest open with a six-run fifth inning.

Things started off well for Bellarmine. Senior left fielder Matt Higgins led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by senior right fielder Jacob Mulcahy for a quick 1-0 advantage.

Kentucky scored two runs in the second in taking the lead for good. The Wildcats added two more in the third before pulling away in the fifth.

Six players had one hit apiece for Bellarmine.

The Knights will play a three-game ASUN series at Jacksonville State starting at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
