FLORENCE, Ala.— Despite a strong offensive day from senior
Hannah Webb and freshman
Chloe Collins, the Knights fell 7-4 in the series finale at North Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights (10-32, 1-14 ASUN) struggled the previous two games at the plate but found life in the late innings of the series. UNA, however, had the final punch and took the series sweep.
North Alabama took an early advantage in similar fashion to its game two victory, scoring three runs in the home half of the first inning. Hailey Jones' RBI double and Georgia Land's two-run home run pushed UNA ahead 3-0. Land's home run was her third in three games.
The Knights were held without a base-runner through the first three innings but put together a rally in the fourth. With two outs in the fourth inning, Webb singled to left field for her third hit of the series. Collins then blasted her second home run of the series, and sixth of the season, over the right-center field fence. Collins' long-ball cut the lead to 3-2.
Megan Murphy shut down UNA in the circle in the fourth and fifth to keep Bellarmine in the hunt, and then the Knights offense came with more life in the sixth inning.
Emily O'Dee and
Alexis Hargrove walked before advancing to second and third on a wild pitch. Webb then delivered her fourth hit in three games and the go-ahead two-RBI double to give Bellarmine a 4-3 lead.
North Alabama, however, had the big answer in the home half of the sixth. Maleah Hargett tied the game 4-4 with a RBI double and nine-hitter Haven Kirby hit the deciding three-run homer to give UNA the lead for good.
Collins ended the series with three hits and two home runs, while Webb had four hits, including three doubles. Webb is now enjoying a seven-game hit streak.
Webb also broke the career double-plays-turned program record with a pair of DP's turned in the series finale. Webb has now turned 25 double plays for her career.
Carson Goatley got the start for the Knights and pitched 0.2 innings, while Murphy did a majority of the work, tossing five innings in relief.
Claire Lehmkuhler pitched 0.1 inning.
Maci Birdyshaw picked up her second win of the series (14
th of the season) with a complete game performance.
