LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lipscomb scored five runs in the sixth to pull away from the Bellarmine University baseball team en route to a 12-4 win Sunday in ASUN play at Knights Field.
Lipscomb (15-13, 4-5 ASUN) earned a series sweep over Bellarmine (3-24, 1-8) as the homer-happy Bisons launched three more long balls to conclude the series. Lipscomb followed the five-run sixth with a three-run seventh featuring three solo homers, breaking open what had been a tight game.
Matt Higgins cranked a three-run homer in the second inning for Bellarmine. In doing so, the senior left fielder moved into a tie for fifth with Austin Crutcher on the program's all-time home run list with 29. Higgins also moved into a tie for fifth with Griffin Neuer on the career RBI list with 149.
Higgins' opposite-field blast vaulted Bellarmine to a 3-2 lead in the second. It followed consecutive singles by junior pitcher/designated hitter
Drew Buhr and senior center fielder
Jack Ockerman.
Unfortunately, Bellarmine couldn't sustain the offense. The Knights wouldn't score again until the ninth when Ockerman, Higgins and senior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy all singled, and Ockerman scored on a wild pitch.
After tossing 3.0 innings of relief Friday, Buhr had an effective start for Bellarmine, allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched. Lipscomb's Ike Buxton (3-2) earned the win after giving up three earned runs in 5.0 innings, while five Bisons relievers combined to allow only one run over the final 4.0 innings.
Ockerman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Higgins went 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs.
Bellarmine will play Tuesday at Eastern Illinois.
