LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Matt Higgins set a new single-season program record for home runs, but the Bellarmine University baseball team was edged 4-3 by Eastern Kentucky in 10 innings on Sunday in ASUN action at Knights Field.
After tying the single-season mark for long balls Saturday, Higgins didn't waste any time seizing the record Sunday, leading off the bottom of the first for Bellarmine (10-33, 7-14 ASUN) by roping a home run off the scoreboard in right field. It was the 19th round-tripper of the season for the senior left fielder, exceeding the 18 amassed by Craig Sharpe in 1986.
For the second time in the series, Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky (29-15, 14-7) went into extra innings. The Knights won 7-6 in 13 innings Friday, but the Colonels came out on top this time.
In the top of the 10th, EKU's Matthew Corlew punched a two-out, go-ahead RBI single to break a 3-all tie. Corlew then appeared as if he would gift Bellarmine a leadoff base runner in the bottom half after dropping a fly ball, but the Knight rounded first base too far and Corlew threw behind him for the tag-out.
With two outs, junior second baseman
Brett Pfaadt reached on an infield single, but EKU righthander Anthony Vargas followed with a game-ending strikeout.
Both teams left 11 runners on base, but the teams combined for a bevy of line outs that easily could have inflated the score if the bad luck hadn't spread seemingly throughout both dugouts. Regardless, the loss was certainly among the toughest to swallow for the Knights this season.
In the ninth, Higgins led off with a single — his fourth hit — and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher
Ashton Smith and to third on a wild pitch. Vargas produced a critical strikeout, and after an intentional walk to sophomore first baseman
Davis Crane, senior shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer put a charge into the ball and nearly ended it before flying out to the warning track in left center.
Higgins went 4-for-5 and the homer boosted his program-record all-time total to 42. Senior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy collected a pair of hits, and Smith had an RBI double in the fifth to tie it at 3.
Sophomore lefthander
Gavin Braunecker delivered a strong start, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched. Senior lefthander
Nick Parrish had 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
