JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Jacksonville State consistently put runners on base and held the Bellarmine bats to one hit in a 6-0 Gamecocks win Sunday afternoon. With the win, JSU completed the weekend sweep.
Bellarmine again struggled against Jacksonville State pitching, putting just two runners on base over the course of the game. Freshman
Kayla Bauer walked for the second consecutive game in the first inning and advanced to second after tagging up on a fly-out to left field. The Knights were unable to bring her home, however, and the game remained scoreless.
Despite a pair of errors from the Bellarmine defense and a JSU walk in the bottom of the first inning, freshman
Claire Lehmkuhler fought through the adversity and induced a groundout to end the inning with the bases loaded and no runs scored.
Jacksonville State again loaded the bases in the second inning after three straight singles to start the frame. Brantly Bonds scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch putting JSU up 1-0. Another walk loaded the bases, but Lehmkuhler induced a rare 7-5-2-5 double play.
Olivia Bricker in left field,
Sydney Young behind the plate, and
Anna Greenwell at third base teamed up for the double play sequence. A pop-out to second base then ended the inning with only one run scored.
Bellarmine's only hit of the game occurred in the third inning when
Anna Greenwell roped a triple to left field. The three-bagger was Greenwell's first of her career but did not result in a run for the Knights.
A quick double from Camryn McLemore and RBI single from Addie Robinson pushed JSU ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Jacksonville State tacked on a run in each of the next two innings as well before scoring two runs in the sixth. Of the six Gamecock runs, four were earned and JSU left 10 on base.
Lehmkuhler tossed all six innings for BU, while Jacksonville State opted to use two pitchers. Kat Carter threw the first 5.2, picking up her team-best 16
th win of the season. Lexi Androlevich finished out the final 1.1 innings for JSU.
Bellarmine concludes its season next week with a three-game series at Lipscomb. The Knights first play at 6:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. CT) on Thursday, followed by a doubleheader scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. CT) and 4:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. CT) on Friday.
