Baseball upended by Jacksonville State in series opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jacksonville State launched four home runs en route to a 12-1 win over the Bellarmine University baseball team in ASUN action Thursday at Knights Field.

JSU (24-27, 17-11 ASUN) smacked back-to-back-to-back homers in the second inning in building a 5-1 lead over Bellarmine (11-41, 8-20). The Gamecocks added three more runs in the fifth and two each in the seventh and ninth in capturing in the series opener.

Although he walked seven, JSU's Reid Fagerstrom nonetheless allowed only a single unearned run on six hits in 7.0 innings pitched. Carson Crowe went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and six RBI.

Bellarmine's lone run came in the first when senior left fielder Matt Higgins walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Davis Crane. Six Knights had one hit apiece.

Junior righthander Ryan Johnson and sophomore righthander Zac Common tossed 1.0 scoreless inning of relief each.

The second of the three-game series is slated for 2 p.m. (ET) Friday.
