LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team concluded the season Saturday with a 9-3 loss to Jacksonville State in ASUN action at Knights Field.
Fighting to secure a spot in the ASUN Tournament entering the series, Jacksonville State (26-27, 19-11 ASUN) successfully completed its mission after earning a sweep against Bellarmine (11-43, 8-22).
The Knights celebrated Senior Day, honoring
A.J. Arnold,
Ethan English,
Matt Higgins,
Clayton Mehlbauer,
Jacob Mulcahy,
Jack Ockerman and
Robert Sproul prior to the contest.
Higgins went 2-for-4, scalding doubles in his last two at-bats. The senior left fielder finished with 20 doubles on the season, in addition to his program-record 22 homers. Higgins becomes the first player in program history with a 20-homer, 20-double season.
Sproul doubled, making all four of his hits this season two-baggers. English and Ockerman both singled and Mulcahy drew a walk. Ockerman and Sproul both scored a run, and junior third baseman
Peyton Back had an RBI single.
Bellarmine took a 2-1 lead in the fourth after a pair of JSU errors led to runs, but the Gamecocks regained the advantage on a three-run homer by Cole Frederick in the fifth. Jacksonville State finished with another big inning, plating four in the ninth.
Sophomore lefthander
Gavin Braunecker delivered a solid start for Bellarmine, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts against no walks in 6.0 innings pitched. Junior righthander
Ryan Johnson tossed 1.0 scoreless frame of relief.
