NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The tying win came in a heart-stopper, and the record-breaking victory unfolded in yet another thriller.
On Sunday at Dugan Field, the Bellarmine University baseball team mounted a dramatic comeback for an 8-7 ASUN win over Lipscomb, in the process making
Larry Owens the winningest head coach in program history.
Owens recorded win number 212 after Bellarmine (11-35, 8-16 ASUN) surged back from a 5-0 deficit in the series finale against Lipscomb (28-19, 15-9). Owens had tied Deron Spink in a 7-6 triumph in 13 innings over Eastern Kentucky on April 29 where the Knights rallied for three runs with two outs and nobody on in the 13th.
Bellarmine trailed Lipscomb 7-4 heading into the eighth inning. With one out, senior designated hitter
Ethan English doubled to left field and freshman second baseman
Casey Sorg had an infield single. The Bisons then made a pitching change to Matthew Bohnert, who walked senior left fielder
Matt Higgins to load the bases.
Sophomore catcher
Ashton Smith cut the deficit to one with a two-run single. Senior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy then propelled Bellarmine into the lead by lacing a two-run single up the middle.
Senior lefthander
Nick Parrish entered for starting sophomore lefthander
Gavin Braunecker to start the eighth and set Lipscomb down in order. Parrish followed an out with a walk on a pair of occasions in the ninth to set up runners on first and second with two outs, but he induced a Malik Williams ground ball to senior shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer, who flipped to second for the easy game-ending out.
Parrish notched his third save of the season. Braunecker settled down after allowing five runs in the first inning to tally his third win of the season. The southpaw gave up seven runs in 7.0 innings, but none came over his final four frames.
After facing that 5-0 deficit, Bellarmine scored three runs with two outs in the third inning. Mulcahy had an RBI single and sophomore first baseman
Davis Crane delivered a two-run single in the stanza.
Lipscomb scored two runs in the bottom half to take a 7-3 lead, but Smith got one back after punching an RBI single in the fourth. After that, Bellarmine's four-run eighth would be the only scoring the rest of the game.
Bellarmine outhit Lipscomb 14-8. Smith and Mulcahy both collected two hits and three RBI, while Crane had two hits and two RBI. Mehlbauer and Sorg also had two hits each, as all nine Knights starters registered at least one hit.
Bellarmine will play at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Tennessee.
