Whalen's late goal leads to 1-1 draw with Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team netted the tying goal with less than six minutes left and went on to post a 1-1 draw with Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday at Hefner Soccer Complex.

Senior forward Tristan Whalen scored off an assist from junior forward Sophie Bish for Bellarmine (0-1-2), which recorded its second straight stalemate. Purdue Fort Wayne (1-1-2) is a member of the Horizon League, a conference in which the Knights have amassed five draws against (0-1-5) in the last two seasons.

Bellarmine needed a late rally to notch the deadlock. In the 77th minute, Purdue Fort Wayne had a takeaway that led to a run into the box. Once there, the Knights had two clear attempts blocked. After the second one, the Mastodons' Mackenzie Evans got off a shot off the ricochet that slipped inside the far post for a 1-0 lead on her third goal of the season.

Purdue Fort Wayne didn't allow Bellarmine's offense many opportunities, but the Knights took advantage of one in the 85th minute. From near the center of the box, Whalen drove a header from 10 yards inside the left post off a corner kick from Bish to equalize the contest.

The goal marked Whalen's first in her career at Bellarmine. Bish, meanwhile, has assisted on both of the Knights' goals this season.

Purdue Fort Wayne finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots, including 5-3 on goal. The Mastodons had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Elyssa Francis and sophomore Cambria Kingman split halves and combined for four saves in goal for Bellarmine.

Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Northern Kentucky.
