HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Senior midfielder
Haziq Zed assisted on one goal and scored another in leading the Bellarmine University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky on Friday night at NKU Soccer Stadium.
Junior forward
Nolan McGrath registered a goal and sophomore midfielder
Brendan Schoemehl collected an assist for Bellarmine (1-1-1), which notched its first victory of the season.
The Knights and Northern Kentucky (1-2) were former rivals from Division II's Great Lakes Valley Conference, last competing in 2011 before the Norse made the jump to D1 the next season while Bellarmine ascended in 2020. Captured over a decade apart, Bellarmine has won two straight over NKU after Friday's series revival.
Bellarmine quickly got into the scoring column when Zed blasted a long ball forward that slipped through NKU's goalkeeper and a defender due to an apparent miscommunication, and McGrath was there to easily poke in his second goal of the season into the empty net for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
The score would remain unchanged at halftime. However, Northern Kentucky knotted it at 1 in the 56th minute. At the tail end of some nice passing around the box, Craig Wellens put away the equalizer.
It didn't take Bellarmine long to regain the lead. In the 63rd minute, Zed rebounded a keeper save off a shot from Schoemehl and, from an extremely challenging angle, fired an attempt that pinballed off the near post and into the net for what stood as the game-winner. It was Zed's first goal of the season.
Northern Kentucky had some chances late, including a header from about 10 yards out with less than 30 seconds remaining that senior goalkeeper
Matthew Brozovich used quick reflexes to snatch.
Bellarmine had a 9-5 advantage in shots, with six coming on goal for the Knights.
Bellarmine will host Chicago State at 2 p.m. (ET) Monday.
