Men's soccer rallies before falling 3-2 at Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team fell 3-2 to Jacksonville on Saturday in ASUN action at Southern Oak Stadium.

Junior midfielder Brendan Schoemehl netted his fourth goal of the season while senior forward Juan Ballas tallied his second for Bellarmine (4-4-6, 2-2-2 ASUN). Schoemehl added an assist, senior defender Brock Pope posted two helpers and senior defender Austin Yowell registered another against Jacksonville (5-7-3, 2-1-3).

Bellarmine has lost two straight and very little has gone the Knights way. In those two matches, three of the opponents' combined four goals have deflected off BU defenders.

On Saturday, it happened twice. Carson Wood's shot in the 17th minute ricocheted off a Knight inside the 6 and into the net. The Dolphins' third goal, in the 71st minute by David Robinson, also changed trajectory after a shot deflected off a Knight and squirted into the net. A very similar situation happened the game prior in a 1-0 loss at Belmont.

Wood scored his second goal on a breakaway off a counterattack in the 55th minute.

Bellarmine fought back multiple times. The Knights equalized the match at 1-1 in the 21st minute when Schoemehl ripped a shot from 10 yards inside the far post following a long service from Yowell and a header pass from Pope.

Down 3-1 in the second half, Bellarmine cut the deficit in half in the 75th minute. From near the left sideline, senior midfielder Jack Fischer served the ball inside the box to Schoemehl. His header pass found Pope, who immediately flicked to Ballas, with the senior forward putting away a header goal.

Pope boosted his team-high assist total to six while Yowell has accumulated three. It was Schoemehl's first helper.

Jacksonville finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots, including 11-2 on frame. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich amassed a season-high eight saves for Bellarmine.

Bellarmine will host Stetson at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday in its regular-season finale.
