Women's soccer falls 1-0 to EKU on late-game PK in season finale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In the squads' regular-season finale, Eastern Kentucky converted on a penalty kick inside the last eight minutes in pulling out a 1-0 win over the Bellarmine University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon in ASUN action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

It was an important win for Eastern Kentucky (5-8-5, 4-3-4 ASUN), which locked up the five-seed in the ASUN Tournament with the three points earned against Bellarmine (4-9-5, 1-7-3). The match marked the season finale for the Knights.

It was Senior Day for Bellarmine, with the Knights honoring midfielders Lindsay Durham and McKenna Hamm for their service to the program prior to the match.

Although there were close calls from both teams, the contest remained scoreless with less than 10 minutes left. However, in the 83rd minute, Bellarmine was called for a foul in the box.

There was some controversy surrounding the call. There seemed to be confusion in regard to the white line representing the box and an adjacent yellow line to its inside. It appeared EKU was initially awarded a free kick after the foul was determined to occur outside the yellow line. However, moments later, the Colonels were awarded a penalty kick because the infraction was deemed inside the deciding white line (the yellow line has no significance relative to a soccer match in Frazier Stadium).

EKU's Mackenzie Burdick cashed in on the opportunity to break the stalemate.

Bellarmine had its chances throughout the match. After scoring two goals in the previous game, sophomore forward Clara Spurlock was perhaps close to at least two more. In the second half, the Knights forced EKU goalkeeper Marah Krick and the defense to make some clutch stops in and around the 6.

Freshman goalkeeper Shelby Smith collected five saves for Bellarmine. EKU finished with a 12-9 advantage in shots, including 6-4 on frame.
