FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored early in the second half, but FGCU answered late as the Knights and Eagles deadlocked 1-1 on Saturday night in ASUN action at Pickering Field.
Junior midfielder
Brendan Schoemehl registered his team-high third goal of the season for Bellarmine (2-2-6, 1-1-2 ASUN), which has posted draws in over half its matches. Senior midfielder
Rahim Shalash collected an assist, and senior goalkeeper
Matthew Brozovich thwarted a penalty kick in the second half by FGCU (3-2-4, 2-0-2).
After a scoreless first half, Bellarmine found the net less than two minutes into the second stanza. Schoemehl drove in a header off a Shalash corner kick to stake the Knights to a 1-0 lead.
FGCU couldn't capitalize on a golden opportunity to tie after being awarded a penalty kick as Brozovich stonewalled the attempt for one of his five saves.
Bellarmine dodged a bullet there but couldn't in the 82nd minute. From the right wing, FGCU's Niall Reid-Stephen curled a free kick into the box that somehow got through heavy traffic and found the foot of Jaffer Murphy, who slotted in an open look from the 6.
FGCU attempted all four of the shots taken over the final eight minutes, but Bellarmine's defense hung on to record the draw. Schoemehl scored on the Knights' only shot of the second half.
FGCU finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots, including 6-1 on frame.
Bellarmine will host Wright State in a nonconference match at 7 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
