LAS CRUCES, NM — On Friday, the Bellarmine University baseball team recorded its first win in the
Chris Dominguez era.
On Saturday, the Knights began their first winning streak under their new head coach.
Drew Buhr delivered a commanding start on the mound, and
Gabe Bratetic drove in half of Bellarmine's runs in an 8-1 victory over New Mexico State at Presley Askew Field.
Bellarmine improved to 2-0 on the season behind Buhr (1-0), who fired 5.0 shutout innings while finishing one strikeout shy of a career high after fanning nine. The senior right-hander struck out the side in the second and third innings and allowed four hits with one walk before departing against New Mexico State (0-2).
Bratetic amassed a career-high four RBIs. The senior catcher walloped a two-run homer in the second and added RBI singles in the fifth and seventh. His three hits tied a career best.
Senior third baseman
Colin Bertsch launched a three-run homer in the sixth for a 7-0 lead. In two games, Bellarmine went deep six times, and all six round-trippers came from different Knights.
Senior second baseman
Peyton Back collected a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the first inning that opened the scoring. Sophomore right fielder
Casey Sorg, senior left fielder
Dylan Byerly and senior shortstop
Brett Pfaadt joined Back with two hits apiece.
Senior right-hander
