BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana held off a ninth-inning rally by the Bellarmine University baseball team to secure a 3-2 win over the Knights on Sunday at Bart Kaufman Field.
Bellarmine (5-11) entered the ninth trailing 3-0 to Indiana (10-6). Sophomore right fielder
Casey Sorg reached on an error to begin the frame and, with one out, senior third baseman
Colin Bertsch singled and freshman pinch hitter
Brady Morse followed with an RBI double.
Senior designated hitter
Dylan Byerly then drove in a run on a ground out to cut the deficit to 3-2. With the tying run on third base, Indiana reliever Ryan Kraft induced a ground out as the Hoosiers completed a four-game sweep.
Junior left-hander
Gavin Braunecker delivered a strong start for Bellarmine, allowing just two earned runs, and three overall, with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Senior right-handers
Devin Ecklar and
Ryan Johnson then combined for 1.2 scoreless innings of relief against Indiana (10-6).
Sorg collected two of Bellarmine's four hits. Indiana's Seti Manase (4.1 innings) and Evan Whiteaker (2.2) combined to keep the Knights off the board through seven innings, and Kraft tossed a scoreless eighth before BU ended the shutout bid in the final frame.
Bellarmine will welcome Evansville at 2 p.m. (ET) Tuesday in its home opener.
