LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine softball team dropped a low-scoring series finale by a final score of 2-1 versus Queens on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams combined for just five hits, two of which were home runs.
The Royals struck first with a leadoff solo blast from Kayla Smith in the first inning. Bellarmine answered the next inning with a leadoff solo shot from
Chloe Collins to center field, tying the game 1-1 in the second.
The game went silent for the next three innings as all but one batter for both sides was retired over the third, fourth, and fifth.
Queens scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth with a hit and the help of two Bellarmine errors. Smith led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a fielding error in right. Smith later came into score after advancing to third on a wild pitch and then scampering home on a throw that went wide of third.
Bellarmine had the tying run on both the sixth and seventh, but the Knights were unable to score the rest of the way.
Claire Lehmkuhler was again great in the circle for Bellarmine, holding Queens to three total hits and just one earned run. Autumn Courtney earned her second win of the series for the Royals, striking out 10 in seven frames.
Bellarmine will travel to Austin Peay next weekend for an ASUN series. Games are scheduled for 3:00 p.m./5:30 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m./4:30 p.m. CT) on Friday and 2:00 p.m. ET (1:00 p.m. CT) on Saturday.
