UCA pulls away from baseball with big ninth inning

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Central Arkansas scored five runs in the ninth inning in pulling away from the Bellarmine University baseball team for a 9-3 win Saturday in ASUN play at Knights Field.

Central Arkansas (18-24, 9-11 ASUN) captured the series after taking the first two games from Bellarmine (11-32, 6-14). The Bears were clinging to a 4-3 lead after eight innings before posting five runs in the ninth, including four with two outs on a two-run single by Drew Sturgeon and a two-run double by Mason King.

Bellarmine led 3-1 after four innings. Senior shortstop Brett Pfaadt lifted a sacrifice fly in the second and added an RBI single in the fourth. The latter followed an RBI double by senior center fielder Will Aubel.

Central Arkansas would regain the lead after plating three runs in the fifth. A pair of walks and a hit batter in the inning hurt the Knights, who were then held scoreless over the final five innings at the plate. Bellarmine left the bases loaded in the eighth while trailing by only one run.

Aubel and senior left fielder Dylan Byerly both collected two hits for the Knights, who registered 10 overall. Sophomore right-hander Arren Hash tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The teams will conclude the series at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
