LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite launching three home runs, the Bellarmine University baseball team fell 8-5 Sunday to Central Arkansas as the Bears completed a three-game ASUN sweep at Knights Field.
Senior center fielder
Will Aubel, junior first baseman
Reed Blaszczyk and senior shortstop
Brett Pfaadt all went deep for Bellarmine (11-33, 6-15 ASUN), but a five-run seventh inning for Central Arkansas (19-24, 10-11) proved to be the deciding factor.
The contest was tied at 3-all until the seventh. Bellarmine was trailing 3-0 in the second when Aubel drilled a two-run homer, his sixth round-tripper of the season. The Knights then tied it up in the fifth on a two-out RBI double by freshman third baseman
Luke Scales.
Things simply didn't go Bellarmine's way in the seventh. A close play on a potential third out on a pickoff attempt went in UCA's favor, as did a pitch on a potential inning-ending strikeout that instead resulted in a walk. The Bears would follow by opening the floodgates, as all five runs scored in the frame came after the Knights had briefly seemed to end the inning on two occasions.
Bellarmine got a couple runs back as Blaszczyk unloaded his team-high ninth homer of the season leading off the eighth, while Pfaadt blistered his second long ball of the series — and third of the year — opening the ninth, but the Bears limited the damage otherwise in those two frames to hold off the Knights.
Scales, senior left fielder
Dylan Byerly and senior second baseman
Peyton Back had two hits apiece for Bellarmine. Freshman right-hander
Brady Morse tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief.
