LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Drew Buhr delivered a commanding performance on the mound, and
Reed Blaszczyk and
Gabe Bratetic fueled one of the Bellarmine University baseball team's best offensive outings of the season in a 14-4 run-rule victory over Queens on Friday in ASUN action at Knights Field.
Blaszczyk went 4-for-4 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle for the Knights (12-38, 7-18 ASUN), whose 14 runs and 17 hits were both the second most of the season. Bratetic went 3-for-3 with five RBI as Bellarmine posted three separate four-run innings against Queens (13-36, 6-19) while claiming the series opener.
The Royals scored four unearned runs in the second inning, but it was all Bellarmine from there. Blaszczyk unleashed the key blow, a two-out, game-tying three-run homer in the third that lit a fire under the Knights. With his 10th long ball of the season, Blaszczyk became the third BU player in the three-year Division-I era to crack double-digit homers (Chris Gambert, 11, 2021;
Matt Higgins, 22, 2022).
Senior left fielder
Tommy Dilz followed Blaszczyk's round-tripper with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by senior second baseman
Peyton Back, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Bellarmine would have two more big innings offensively, but ultimately the third is where the game turned for good as Buhr settled in and didn't allow a single earned run over 7.0 innings pitched. The senior right-hander collected his fifth win behind six strikeouts and yielded seven hits while walking only one. Buhr faced the minimum from the fourth through the sixth and didn't allow a baserunner past second over his final five frames.
Bratetic had an RBI single in the fifth and roped a two-out, three-run homer in the seventh following an RBI single by Back. It was Bratetic's third time going deep this season.
Blaszczyk cranked his second double of the game in the eighth and scored his fifth run on Dilz's two-run double. Dilz scored on a wild pitch and senior shortstop
Brett Pfaadt triggered the 10-run rule with an RBI single.
Dilz and sophomore right fielder
Casey Sorg had two hits apiece as five Knights registered multi-hit games. Senior right-hander
Devin Ecklar tossed 1.0 scoreless inning of relief.
The teams will meet at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday in the second of the three-game series. Bellarmine will celebrate Senior Day.
