LOUISVILLE, Ky. — No. 25 Louisville had two big innings midway through Tuesday night's contest at venerable Louisville Slugger Field in defeating the Bellarmine University baseball team 18-7.
Bellarmine (11-34) jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Louisville (29-15) after four innings, but the Cardinals scored six runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth to take control. U of L amassed 19 hits, including a three-run homer from Isaac Humphrey and a two-run shot by Ryan McCoy in the sixth inning.
Senior left fielder
Dylan Byerly smashed a two-run homer in the seventh for Bellarmine. Freshman shortstop
Luke Scales added an RBI single in the eighth as he extended his hitting streak to 15 games, tying the previous season high of sophomore right fielder
Casey Sorg.
Bellarmine opened the scoring in the first when senior center fielder
Will Aubel had a two-out single, stole second and scored on a single by Byerly. The Knights tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
Louisville had three errors in the inning. Sorg laid down a sacrifice bunt and senior catcher
Gabe Bratetic a squeeze bunt where both also reached on Cardinal miscues. One run scored on a throwing error after Sorg's bunt, Bratetic pushed across another and Scales lofted a sacrifice fly to plate a third run in the frame.
Senior right-hander
Matt Craven struck out four in 2.0 scoreless innings to open the game. Sophomore right-hander
Arren Hash retired the side in order in an inning of scoreless relief.
Aubel and Byerly collected two hits apiece as the Knights had seven total.
Bellarmine will play a three-game series at Jacksonville starting with a 7 p.m. (ET) contest Friday.
