LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Bellarmine University baseball team went out with a bang.
In their season finale Saturday at Liberty Baseball Stadium, the Knights rolled to a senior-driven 13-6 romp over the Flames in ASUN action.
Bellarmine (13-42, 8-22 ASUN) posted its third-highest run total of the season in the series finale against Liberty (26-28, 16-14). The Knights amassed 10 hits, but their patience at the plate was equally as important, as they drew a season-high 12 walks, which was five more than their previous best.
The season-ending victory was powered by seniors. On the mound, senior right-hander
Nolan Pender earned his fifth win of the season after tossing 6.0 solid innings where he allowed four runs on six hits while striking out five. Senior right-hander
Matt Craven sealed the victory after fanning three in 1.2 innings, including a strikeout to end it.
At the plate, continuing the senior theme, senior catcher
Gabe Bratetic followed a single by senior left fielder
Tommy Dilz in the third by blistering a two-run homer to open the scoring. Bratetic's two-run blast was his fourth round-tripper of the season.
Liberty briefly took the lead with a three-run bottom half, but Bellarmine answered with a four-run fourth. The seniors were at it again as Dilz laced a go-ahead two-run single before the Knights added two more runs, the latter on an RBI single by senior center fielder
Dylan Byerly.
It was still 6-4 when junior designated hitter
Reed Blaszczyk crushed a two-run homer to dead center in the seventh. It was Blaszczyk's team-high 11th long ball of the season.
Bellarmine left no doubt after delivering a five-run eighth. Senior second baseman
Peyton Back singled and senior shortstop
Brett Pfaadt rifled a two-run single, but the Knights did a lot of damage by staying disciplined and taking advantage of Liberty's erratic control on the mound. Senior third baseman
Colin Bertsch and Bratetic both forced in runs after drawing bases-loaded walks.
Back, Blaszczyk and Dilz collected two hits each. Bratetic walked three times in addition to driving in three runs. Dilz, Bertsch, sophomore right fielder
Casey Sorg and junior first baseman
Davis Crane drew two walks each, and Pfaadt was also regularly on base with two hit by pitches included in his day. Crane and Dilz scored three runs apiece.
