Women's soccer falls at No. 21 Xavier in final nonconference contest

CINCINNATI, Ohio — In its final nonconference game of the regular season, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team fell 2-0 to No. 21 Xavier on Sunday at Corcoran Field.

An NCAA Tournament team the past two seasons, Xavier (6-1) scored early in the first half and deep in the second half against Bellarmine (3-2-2), which saw its four-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Xavier's Sonia Vargas scored off an assist from Kennedy Clark in the 11th minute. Although the Musketeers consistently threatened to add to their lead, Shelby Sallee didn't tack on the insurance goal until the 86th minute, with the assist credited to Jane Olcott.

Junior goalkeeper Natalie Schutte, who transferred to Bellarmine from Xavier, snared a career-high eight saves, all in the second half. Junior Cambria Kingman was also busy in the first half, amassing five saves before the break for the Knights.

Bellarmine will open ASUN play at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Austin Peay.
