LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Sunday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team set a Division I-era program record with its third straight win, the result of a 2-1 triumph over Chicago State.
Freshman forward
Lauren Bingham scored two first-half goals for Bellarmine (3-1-1), which had a third before halftime negated due to offsides. Freshman midfielder
Sydni Whitehead and sophomore forward
Lucy von Stefenelli registered an assist each against Chicago State (1-4).
Chicago State had some near misses in the early going. The Cougars had a dangerous chance in front of the goal off a cross that sailed high less than two minutes into the match, and they had a shot carom off the post roughly seven minutes later.
However, Bellarmine would settle in as Bingham tallied her first goal in the 19th minute. It came on a breakaway as Whitehead made a strong lead pass, and Bingham dribbled all the way to the 6 before slotting her shot into the net.
Less than one minute later, Bingham found the net for a second time. She was spotted by von Stefenelli and had another 1v1 with the goalkeeper, converting yet again for her third goal in two games.
Bellarmine nearly had a heftier advantage at halftime. Freshman defender
Teagan Douglas had a header off a corner kick deflect off the post, and the Knights had a third goal waved off due to offsides.
Ultimately, Bingham's second goal proved to be the difference. Early in the second half, Chicago State was awarded a free kick just outside the box, and Hannah Bennett capitalized by sinking the opportunity and cutting the deficit in half.
Bellarmine buckled down defensively and never conceded the equalizer. Chicago State finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots, but they were at four apiece on frame.
Junior goalkeeper
Cambria Kingman played the first half and was credited with the win in goal while collecting two saves.
Bellarmine will play at 6 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Morehead State.
