Men's soccer notches first shutout but plays to scoreless draw with NKU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team recorded its first shutout of the season in a scoreless draw with Northern Kentucky on Monday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Making its 2023 home debut, Bellarmine (0-1-3) played to a stalemate for the third time in four games. Northern Kentucky (0-0-3) has also been no stranger to deadlocks, now playing even in all three of its matches this season.

Bellarmine finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots, but the teams were tied at four apiece on frame. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich and NKU counterpart Nic Lemen both saved all four they faced in registering clean sheets.

Bellarmine had a 6-4 edge in shots at halftime, although Northern Kentucky controlled more of the possession. The Knights then had an 8-4 advantage in shots after the break and dictated play much better in the second half.

Both teams had chances. In the 87th minute, NKU's Roberto Burlew lined a header off a corner kick that nearly grazed the crossbar.

Lemen made a fingertip save on a header by Bellarmine freshman forward Colin Elder off a set piece. In the second half, senior midfielder Thomas Stickley barely missed on a bicycle kick, and he and senior forward Juan Ballas worked well together to create multiple good looks.

Bellarmine will play at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Eastern Illinois.
