Women's soccer strikes early, tames Wolves in 3-1 victory

Knights set new D1-era record with fifth total win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It was Sweep Week at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team.

Bellarmine scored twice inside the first 15 minutes and largely rode that exceptional start to a 3-1 victory over West Georgia on Sunday in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Sophomore midfielder Sydni Whitehead, freshman forward Campbell Tippey and freshman forward McKenzie Carle each tallied a goal for Bellarmine (5-8-2, 4-3-1 ASUN), which swept its final two regular-season home games after pounding Queens 4-0 on Thursday. Carle, junior defender Emily Passini and senior forward Sophie Bish collected an assist each against West Georgia (2-12, 1-7).

In Callie McKinney's first season as head coach, Bellarmine had already set a new D1-era program record for ASUN wins — which BU added to Sunday — and now the Knights have established a new D1-era precedent for total wins with five. Bellarmine has triumphed in three of its last four games.

Bellarmine showcased its quick-strike ability against West Georgia. In the sixth minute, Whitehead gathered a Wolves clearance and blasted a shot from 25 yards that grazed the top of the UWG goalkeeper's fingers and trickled into the net. It was the first career goal for the holding midfielder.

Bellarmine didn't take long to bump its lead to 2-0. In the 14th minute, Carle tracked down a lead pass from Passini and made a cross to the 6 in stride for Tippey, who tapped it into the net for her third goal of the season, all of which have been game-winners.

There were multiple lengthy injury timeouts in the second half and not much rhythm to the stanza. Katherine Hagans cut West Georgia's deficit in half in the 80th minute.

However, Bellarmine restored its two-goal lead less than two minutes later. Bish spotted Carle on the right side, and Carle slotted a shot from 10 yards inside the far post for her fifth goal of the season.

Bellarmine finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots, including 13-5 on frame.

Bellarmine concludes the regular season with three straight ASUN road games, the first at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday at North Florida.
