RICHMOND, Ky. — Freshman forward
McKenzie Carle found the net for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team, but Eastern Kentucky set pieces were the Knights' Achilles heel in a 3-1 loss Friday afternoon to the Colonels in an Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season finale at EKU Soccer Field.
Senior defender
Hannah Longstreet notched an assist for Bellarmine (5-11-2, 4-6-1 ASUN), which will await its seeding fate in the ASUN Tournament. The Knights need Jacksonville to lose or draw Saturday night at North Florida to secure the seven-seed. If the Dolphins defeat the Ospreys, they will wrangle the seven-seed and BU will drop to the eight-seed.
Eastern Kentucky (10-7-2, 7-3-1), which could gain as high as the three-seed after the win, converted each of its goals off set pieces. The Colonels bracketed goals off a pair of corner kicks around another off a free kick just outside the box in building a 3-0 lead by the 47th minute.
Bellarmine did get on the board in the 65th minute off Carle's sixth goal of the season, all of which have come in ASUN play. She headed home a cross from Longstreet to spoil EKU's shutout bid.
The shots were close. Eastern Kentucky finished with an 11-10 edge, including 6-5 on frame. The Knights had a decisive 10-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Colonels scored on both opportunities.
Bellarmine will compete Thursday in the first round of the ASUN Tournament. The league is expected to announce the bracket Saturday night after the day's last three remaining conference games are completed.
