FLORENCE, Ala. —
Campbell Tippey is quickly establishing a reputation for late-game heroics.
On Thursday night at the Florence Sportsplex, the Bellarmine University women's soccer freshman forward scored in the 73rd minute to lift the Knights to a 1-0 victory over North Alabama in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Senior forward/midfielder
Emma Nicholson assisted on the goal for Bellarmine (3-7-2, 2-2-1 ASUN), which notched its first road win of the season. Through five ASUN games, the Knights have already accumulated more points (seven) than last year (six in 11 games), eclipsing the total in
Callie McKinney's first season as the head coach.
North Alabama (3-8, 1-4) limited Bellarmine to one shot in the first half and only five total, but the Knights just needed to capitalize once as the defense recorded its third shutout of the season, two of which have come in ASUN play.
Once again, Tippey made good on the moment. Two games prior, the true freshman scored in the 90th minute of a 2-1 win over Stetson.
Against North Alabama, Tippey was in the right place at the right time. Nicholson rifled a shot inside the box that UNA's goalkeeper managed to deflect off the crossbar. Tippey was attentive to the follow-up opportunity, immediately breaking for the ball off the carom and punching in the rebound for a 1-0 lead on her second goal of the season compliments of Nicholson's third assist.
North Alabama was credited with five shots after Tippey's goal, but Bellarmine's defense held firm against those, not to mention 12 others in the match. The Lions finished with a 17-5 advantage in shots, including 8-4 on frame.
Cambria Kingman recorded her second shutout and gathered eight saves for Bellarmine. It was the senior goalkeeper's fourth outing this season of eight saves or more and seventh with five or more.
Bellarmine will play an ASUN contest at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Central Arkansas.
